About Sikkim-Darjiling

The history of Darjeeling is intertwined with that of Sikkim, Nepal, British India, Bhutan and Bengal. Until the early 19th century, the hilly area around Darjeeling was controlled by the kingdom of Sikkim, while the plains around Siliguri were intermittently occupied by the Kingdom of Nepal, with settlement consisting of a few villages of Lepcha and Kirati people. If one opts for traveling by road then there are number of entry points for Bhutan. One can go to the bordering town Phuentsholing from Guwahati via Bongaigaon, Assam which is approximately 360 km (6-7 hrs drive) & approximately 375 km (7-8 hrs drive) via Goalpara, Assam. One can also enter Bhutan through Samdrup Jongkhar, a small town and is an important entry & exit point in south-east bordering state of Assam, India due to proximity to the airport (approx 110 km/ 3.5 hrs drive) in Guwahati.
